Larry Zarella

with special opener Joshua Shelton
8 PM, Friday, February 5th
$10 ($8 F & B Members)

Larry Zarella is a fine songwriter who opened for Bill Staines two years ago. He lived in Alaska for a while and his songs reflect his time spent there and the people and places that he encountered. His songs can be touching, funny, whimsical and usually tell a story. His guitar work is solid and he is a fine singer.

His opening set for Bill Staines was very well received and he was invited back for the Black Walnut Festival the following fall. We got just a taste of this Larry’s work in 2008 and delighted to be bring him back for his own show.

Opening for Larry will be Joshua Shelton, a talented young musician from up in Stokes County.

Iona

8 PM, Friday, February 19th
$12 ($10 F & B Members)

Iona is a Celtic band from the Washington, D.C. area. Founder Barbara Ryan is lead vocalist and accompanies herself on bouzouki, bodhran and percussion. Bernard Argent adds flute, doumbek and occasionally guitar. He is also the band’s yarn spinner. Chuck Lawhorn is bassist and also dabbles in whistle and sings a mean tenor harmony. Jim Queen, a veteran of the Air Force Band, is fiddler and also adds a touch of banjo and guitar.

Travelling with the band will be dancer Kathleen Larrick adding an exciting visual dimension to Iona’s performance. She has studied Irish step dancing, Highland dance and Appalachian clogging.

Although Fiddle & Bow had an early reputation for presenting Celtic music, we haven’t been bringing in many Celtic band over the past several years. We’re excited about bringing this exciting band to our stage again.
